Featured Photographer – Lana Williams of Panama Pinups!!

So every so often we would like to present a featured photographer on our blog! Today we will be featuring Lana Williams of Panama Pinups who so graciously answered our Q & A! We had the privilege of actually meeting Lana this last February in Las Vegas while at WPPI. It was so nice to meet someone who was truly excited about her boudoir business! We definitely encourage you to check out her work!

So onto the Q & A…

Business Name : Panama Pinups

Photographer : Lana Williams

Location: Florida Panhandle, Panama City

TBP: What is the strangest request you have had since opening your boudoir business? (Or the strangest you wish to repeat!)
LW: recently had a woman call me requesting to photograph her in “20” different lingerie outfits because she has so many that she could not just narrow it down to 3 or 4.
TBP: What do you do to loosen up a really nervous client?
LW: I set up a pre-shoot consultation with every client so they are able to come by the studio before the shoot to meet me and see where we will be shooting. These always seems to help relax a client that has reservations about doing a boudoir session.  A little champagne just before the shoot seems to help as well!
TBP: How do you describe what you do for a living to others? (if they do not know what “boudoir” is)
LW: I tell them I help women feel beautiful and sexy in photographs.
TBP: Where would you love to shoot a boudoir session?  Sky is the limit!  Oh, and why?
LW: I love to travel!  After going to Italy a few years ago, I would love to go back there and shoot a boudoir session in a villa in Tuscany.  The textures of the old villas are amazing in themselves, but to do a boudoir shoot there would be a dream come true.  AND to add an outside session in a garden or vineyard, this would be the ultimate boudoir session for me!
TBP: If you could photograph anyone in a boudoir setting who would it be?  Male, female or both together or separately and tell us why you would pick them?
LW: The person that I would love to photograph is the woman that has low self esteem, not a movie star or another famous person.  I get the most satisfaction from helping a woman realize she is beautiful, even if she is a size 16!  It’s not about being skinny or a natural-born beauty.  We as photographers can show each and every person they are beautiful and that is why I love my job!

TBP: What is your favorite pose/body part to photograph?

LW: Wow, a favorite body part!  There are so many…but one of my very favorite shots is to stand behind a woman who is either seated or laying down and focus on her eyelashes and use depth of field to let the rest of the photo just drift off into the distance.

TBP:  Who is your biggest inspiration and why?
LW: It may sound odd that my biggest inspiration is my mom.  The reason I say that is because she would have NEVER thought about doing a boudoir session.  It is her fears that inspire me to really want to do Boudoir photography.  There is nothing wrong with wanting to feel and look sexy and I am proving that to her now. 🙂
TBP: What is the best decision you have ever made for your business?
It was to actually open my very own studio!  It is so wonderful to have a place that woman can come and feel relaxed and pampered for a day.  Not only do I have the photography studio, I also have a hair salon on site as well.  Woman can have their hair and makeup done before the shoot and walk through a door and be in my studio.  They love it!
TBP: What makes you feel the best about being a boudoir photographer?
It absolutely because of how a woman feels when she leaves after a session.  It is empowering and builds so much self confidence; like nothing I have ever experienced before.  When I receive emails from these ladies later telling me it was the best experience they’ve EVER had for themselves, it makes me feel so good to know I have helped them have this feeling.  It truly is about how they “FEEL”.
TBP: What is the biggest myth, in your opinion, about boudoir photography?
That it is only for “thin” people.  I have women tell me all the time, I can’t wait to lose 15 or 20 pounds so I can book a shoot.  You do not have to be thin to be beautiful!
TBP: Anything else you want the world to know about you…
LW: I have loved photography from the time I was a child.  I grew up in a conservative home with very loving parents, and am happy that they support me in my business.  Living in the Deep South, this “type” of photography is not something that is acceptable to a lot of people, but what I am finding is that a lot of conservative woman want to experience this as long as they are guaranteed it will not be exposed all over the internet.  I have a strict policy of confidentiality, and this has brought a lot of boudoir business to me that would not come in otherwise.  Of all the types of photography I do, Boudoir is my absolute favorite!

  1. Fabulous article! I recently opened a studio so I could help “everyday” women, especially those who have been mom’s for awhile, to make a deeper connection with their sensuality and inherent beauty. I love that boudoir photography can be very liberating and transformational, and fun!

  2. Beautiful shots here, and 20 lingerie outfits, that must have taken forever!
