A few years back on my personal blog I listed my 99 favorite photographers. In the spirit of this blog I decided to make a list of 10 photographers that every boudoir photography should study. This is my own personal opinion, and I know that I am heavily influenced by these masters. If there is anyone you feel should have made this list feel free to let me know! When possible I have linked each of these amazing photographers websites!
If you haven’t seen Lillian Bassman’s Lingerie book…I suggest you get it immediately! A true pioneer of photographing women in lingerie, her work was progressive and clearly before her time.
Probably the freshest photographer on this list, her images are fashionable, slightly erotic, classy and so desirable to look at all at the same time.
Iconic images. Horst spent over 6 decades (yes 60 years!) photographing beautiful nudes & fashion.
Clean lines, moving the human figure into a work of fine art. Stunning, simple and beautiful. Less is more.
5. Herb Ritts
One of my favorite photographer’s of all time. Herb Ritts made the human body (male or female) his canvas. And of course any photographer whose photograph has been satirically copied a million times, deserves to be on this list.
A love for powerful a strong women, Helmut Newton can do no wrong as a photographer in my eyes. Nude or clothed he made women look simply amazing.
7. Irving Penn
While known mostly for his portrait work, Irving Penn was also amazing when it came to nudes that had a sense of realism. If you get a chance look at his book Earthly Bodies in which he really explores the female form.
If you love old hollywood style photography, look no more! George Hurrell was the original master of Hollywood Glamour Photography and photographed beautiful women such as Jean Harlow, Greta Garbo, Bette Davis and many more!
Back in June 2011 Steven Meisel did possibly one of my favorite fashion spreads ever for Vogue Italia. He showed the world that women with curves can look amazing in lingerie!
Here’s the whole spread if you want to see it (NSFW)
10. Arny Freytag
While I personally am more influenced by art & fashion photographers, it would be wrong if I didn’t include at least one glamour photographer! Arny has been photographing for playboy centerfolds for decades and has some amazing lingerie & nude work!
